Katiyar is a Brij or Awadhi language word.Katiyar surname has origin from the word Katara or Sword. Katiyar is same as Swordsman in English or Gladiator in Latin. Katiyars are dominant in Districts of Farrukhabad,Kannauj and Kanpur. Katiyars belong to Kurmi Kshatriya caste of Hinduism.
Kurmis are the Suryavanshi Kshatriya. The word Kurmi has origin from Kurmanchal or Kumaon. Kurmi Kings ruled Kurmanchal(kumaon) and built many temples there.
Kurmis are the descendants of the Gaharwar rulers of Kannauj. Jai Chandra or Jai Chand was the last ruler of Kannauj. after invasion of Kannauj in 12th century by muslim invaders descendants of Jai Chand moved to Kurmanchal (Kumaon) and established their kingdom. Since then these Suryavanshi Kshatriyis are known as Kurmi. They prefer to call themselves kurmi, may be to hide the loss of Kingdom of Kannauj. Chand Kings ruled Kumaon till the British rule, though.
Kurmi community is the strongest community in India and abroad, but it's broadly fregmented. The leadership skills of our community are well known. We have given leaders like Sardar Patel and Nitish Kumar to India. Our community has the ability to give leaders, who are honest and educated. We will bring back Ram Rajya in India by providing good and able leadership. We can use our ancient royal symbol of Sun and medieval symbol of Kurma (turtle) on our buildings, doors, vehicles, products and websites, to show our unity.
